Hiroshi Matsushima

Renowned for his outstanding musical interpretation across a broad range of styles, Hiroshi Matsushima has distinguished himself as one of the most vital musicians.

He joined the faculty of the Mahidol University College of Music in 2002. Prior to his arrival in Thailand, Mr. Matsushima has appeared at major music festivals in Europe, such as Reichenau am Bodensee, Rheingau, MDR-Musiksommer and Schleswig-Holstein, and has performed in several professional orchestras, such as Hof Symphony, Munich Symphony, Munich Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonia of the Nations in Germany.

Mr. Matsushima has appeared on numerous occasions as a soloist and chamber musician. Besides regular performances with Mahidol woodwind faculty, he has given 3 solo recitals and performed with Latvian String Trio, Mahidol Wind Symphony, and other guest musicians.

An avid proponent of new music and music of the Japans, Hiroshi Matsushima has commissioned and performed works by notable composers. Residing in Thailand, he has not ceased to contribute to the Japanese music culture, having premiered flute works of Toru Takemitsu in Thailand and collaborated with players of Japanese traditional instruments. He has been sent to Chiang Mai and Yangon as a cultural mission by the Japan Foundation.

Hiroshi Matsushima is highly regarded as a thoughtful, engaging, and challenging teacher, and is frequently demand on teaching masterclasses. Besides teaching at Mahidol, he has been serving as an artist/faculty of Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble (SAYOWE) since its foundation in 2003. In 2005, he has formed Flute Ensemble "Siang-Nanachart" with his selected students, and has been touring throughout Thailand for concerts, workshops and outreach activities that can interchange with people among country. In 2006 and 2008, he joined at PESTA music camp as a flute tutor as well as a player in the festival orchestra on the invitation of the Penang State Symphony Orchestra (PESSOC), Malaysia. Mr. Matsushima has also been acting as an adjudicator for Asian Symphonic Band Competition (ASBC) and Thailand Youth Musician Competition. His articles on flute playing have recently been published in the Music Journal magazine.

A graduate of the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Germany and guest student at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mozarteum in Salzburg, Matsushima has extensively studied with Renate Greiss-Armin, Matthias Allin and Irena Grafenauer. While spent in Europe, he also studied with Andrea Lieberknecht, Andreas Blau, Dieter Flury and Jean-Pierre Rampal. In his native Japan, Mr. Matsushima studied with Etsuro Sano and Kanichi Tanaka.
